Debate between the Prime Ministers of Poland and the Czech Republic

The debate was attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, and the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala. Adam Eberhardt from the Centre for Eastern Studies was responsible for moderation. The debate dealt with the consequences of the war in Ukraine in geopolitics, as well as the role of Poland and the Czech Republic in multidimensional help to Ukraine.

Poland and the Czech Republic are at the forefront of support, taking into account both military issues, i.e. supplies of equipment and armaments, as well as political and humanitarian issues. All the more important is the Polish-Czech cooperation in the coming months.

Both Prime Ministers drew attention to the unprecedented unity of European societies in the context of the reaction to Russian aggression against Ukraine. The social upheaval that followed it triggered a response from European governments.

24th of February 2022 is therefore a turning point in geopolitics. According to Mateusz Morawiecki, at this point what counts is the strong voice and the right of people who have presented a consistent vision of the world for years. Examples of such countries are Poland and the Czech Republic, which warned against Russia’s imperial foreign policy, and are now providing Ukraine with effective support. Although financial aid comes from all countries of the free world, and Poland and the Czech Republic are leaders in exerting pressure on partners in Western Europe.

This also applies to energy policy, the assumptions of which from the previous year have fallen into ruin. It is now necessary to redefine its objectives and to consider a new vision of energy security in Europe. Again, both Poland and the Czech Republic speak loudly about the need to build a new energy policy that cannot be dependent on authoritarian states and about increasing the economic resilience of the European Union.
