Amazon invests in the development of the Polish local economy, digitisation, and sustainability

8th European Congress of Local Governments Expert features

Since 2012 Amazon has invested over PLN 18.5 billion in Poland, which translates into PLN 20 billion impact to Poland’s GDP. Today, there are ten modern logistics centers across the country, Amazon Web Services and Amazon Technology Development Centers in Gdansk, Krakow and Warsaw, which provide innovative solutions to support Amazon products and services worldwide. Customers shopping on Amazon.pl have access to over 400 million products at attractive prices, with fast and convenient delivery.

– Amazon’s investments in Poland have measurable results. They contribute to local employment and support entrepreneurs in growing their businesses, both in Poland and abroad. The new investments also mean a number of contracts with local contractors throughout the supply chain process and new jobs in other sectors,” says Mourad Taoufiki, Country Manager of Amazon Poland.

Amazon has created a total of more than 70,000 direct and indirect jobs in Poland to date, including in companies that support Amazon’s logistics operations and in Polish SMEs that sell on Amazon.pl – New facilities, such as the Fulfillment Center in Świebodzin opened in 2021, represent modern jobs for the local community and a significant boost to the regional economy. It’s also an innovative and inclusive organizational culture,” says Marian Sepesi, Amazon’s Regional Director Operations in CEE.

At the same time, the number of SMEs selling on Amazon is growing significantly every year in Poland. In 2021, they sold more than 25 million products – It goes without saying that Polish SMEs selling on Amazon – exporting products worth more than €750 million in 2021 and creating new jobs – are an important element in economy. Local SMEs provide great value to our customers and we will continue to support them by creating a business community that fosters the growth of their businesses and the overall economy” says Mourad Taoufiki.

In parallel with the development of its products, services and technology, Amazon is investing in sustainability: since 2021 it has been using paper bags, cardboard envelopes and cardboard boxes that are sourced and 100% recyclable throughout Europe, including in Poland. It has installed 3,900 solar panels on the 8,600m2 roof of its Fulfillment Center in Świebodzin, and in 2022 signed one of the largest cPPAs in Poland to purchase renewable energy from a photovoltaic farm in Miłkowice.
